FALL ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS 2007
The following programs have been designed to help participants who are challenged get the most out of their leisure experience!
These programs have been modified to provide a safe and supportive environment to learn and practice both program skills and
personal skills. Peer mentors attend most programs to provide visual and social cues and to keep things fun. These and other
supportive services are also available to anyone who wishes to attend any of our other programs. For further information on
supportive services, please call the office (294-2120) to talk with our Recreation Therapist. Together we can make recreation

WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Our Adaptive programs are now "coded" with colors to provide information about the expectations if each class. Use the information
below to select the best program.
BLUE- For participants who are comfortable participating in social conversations and can follow multi-step directions
with minimal modifications.
ORANGE- For all to attend
GREEN- For participants who have difficulty communicating their needs verbally, are able to follow single step directions
and prefer a modified environment to be comfortable in programs.
Music N Motion ages 5-10 GREEN
Movi'n to music while on Hoppity Hops and scooters make this class a fun place for your challenged child to learn to wait his
or her turn, greet friends and follow directions. Visual cues and mentors make the class comfortable and fun!
Tuesdays 6:00- 6:45 ages 5-6 7:00-7:45 ages 7-9 October 2nd to November 29th

Adaptive swimming for all ages! ORANGE
Come and enjoy an hour of swimming fun and games. Swimmers are paired with high school student volunteers who will encourage
them to swim and socialize. This is a recreational swim for individuals who are challenged only.
September 27th to November 8th Thursdays 7:30 to 8:30 ages 13 and up, 7:45 go 8:30 ages 3-12

New Heights 6-12yrs ORANGE
Indoor rock climbing for children who are challanged. Games and the buddy system are used to slowly build confidence and social
skills. Please wear loose fitting clothing and snug sneakers. Participants must meet some physical requirements and must be
45 inches tall. Wednesdays 5:45-6:45 Sept.27th to Nov. 15th

Mulligan Golf League 8-16yrs ORANGE
This adaptive golf lesson will expose challenged individuals to the basics of golf, including equipment and rules. Class will take
place at a local driving range weather permitting. The group may play a round of golf for the last class. Please register to be on
our cancellation-calling list. Dates to be announced
Fee: Participants purchase tokens at golf range as needed ($3.00 per bucket)

Rec. Club 16 yrs - Adult GREEN
Be it dancing, bowling or just hanging out with friends old and new, the Rec. Club is the place to be! Each evening is themed
around a special event or holiday and may include games, recreation, movies or a craft. Adventures in the community are always
a possibility (movies or coffee house). The Club is a social group for physically and or cognitively challenged individuals ages
16 to adult and is on going throughout the year. Please register to be on our mailing list for our newsletter.
Second Thursday of the month- 4:30-6:15 bowling at the Brunswick Lanes, South Colony
First and Third Friday of the month 7:00-9:00 pm social activities at the Park and Rec. Dept.

T.O.P.S. Soccer ages 6-11 ORANGE
This is an adaptive indoor/outdoor soccer league for challenged children who want to learn basic soccer skills and progress to
playing a game. Call Coach Bill Fallon of the Wallingford Youth Soccer League at 269-9173 for more information on meeting times
and locations. Schedule as follows:
February through April meet indoor at Dag Middle School Gym, Fridays, 6:30 - 7:30pm.
April through June meet outdoors at Vietnam Veterans Field (East Center St.) Saturdays 9:30 to 10:30
Creative Impressions ages 10-13 BLUE
This class will use basic theater games to provide opportunities to practice social skills, learn to pay attention to non- verbal
cues and to be more comfortable using imagination skills. Peer mentors will assist participants as they explore the art of improvisation,
joke telling, simple mime techniques and acting in short plays or vignettes.
Fee: $40.00 Thursdays 5:45- 6:45 October 4th to December 13th

Mini Muscles Ages 3-6 ORANGE
Funny Muscles for the younger crowd. Parents are welcome to join in on this fun filled class. Children will enjoy playing with
gymnastic equipment as they work to improve muscle motor planning, balance, social skills and self-esteem. Music and peer mentors
will keep activities fun and full of energy!
Fridays 1:00 - 1:45 October 19th to December 23rd (no class November 23rd) Location: Gymnastics Room

Funny Muscles ages 6-10 ORANGE
This class may look like a traditional gymnastics class, but behind the fun lie some very important goals. Through this class your
child will have the opportunity to work on muscle motor planning, balance, self-esteem and social skills. A certified Occupational
Therapy Assistant and a Para-professional will help your child achieve these and other goals in a fun and playful way.

Mega Mussels Ages 11-16 ORANGE
The next generation of fun in motion. The class will flow through some wild and crazy activities that will utilize deep pressure
touch and heavy muscle work to improve muscle strength and endurance. Mentors will provide opportunities for socialization and
building self-esteem.

I'm Special ORANGE
This is a parent run meeting time and play group for families touched by Downs Syndrome. The children (including siblings) will
love playing with a variety of free play equipment while parents get to know each other. This is an opportunity for parents to gain
support from other parents and to share information regarding Downs Syndrome. Contact Colleen May at 203-679-0307 for information and

Rim Rockers ages 8-12 ORANGE
This class is the perfect way to learn about basketball without the pressure of an organized league. Players will build on basic
skills and progress to playing games. This is a great opportunity for players to practice team concepts and goodhearted competition.
All activities will be modified to include all players and mentors will keep the game going. Staff: Nick Nieves and Jodi

Wednesday 6:00-6:45 October 10th to December 5th (no class November 21st)
Sand Lot Sundays Ages 10-14 ORANGE
Fall means Flag Football! Don't get left out of the fun! Learn the basics of the game while laughing with friends on a beautiful fall
day. Register one child and the whole family can join in on the fun! (some age restrictions may apply) Sundays 1:00 to 2:00 Sept.

In the Mix ages 18 and up BLUE
Movies, food and fun! Activities are organized for adults with ASD who are interested in hanging out with new friends while going to
the movies, participating in "game night" or going out for pizza! This social club will provide opportunities for social learning by
providing adult mentors for participants to hang out with at various events and activities.
Call Kathy at the Park and Rec. Dept.(294-2120) for dates and schedule of upcoming events.
Max Out ages 12-16 BLUE/GREEN
Teens and "Tweens" will practice the art of "hanging out" with peer mentors as they venture out into the community. Experienced
staff will chaperone the group as they organize the adventures! Schedule of events may include indoor rock-climbing, Hip Hop dance
lesions, basket ball, and attending an occasional Hip House dance at the Rec. Dept.
Fee: $98.00 (does not include entrance fees for activates outside of the Rec. Dept) Fridays 7:00 - 9:00 BLUE OR GREEN

Eclectic Expressions ages 11-14 GREEN/BLUE
Explore interesting and new ways to express yourself using a variety of art materials and support from peer mentors! With the guidance
of the Art Therapist, members of this class will find a new voice by using clay, collage, painting, drawing and mixed media to express
themselves! No prior artistic experience is necessary and a group discussion will round things off by providing the opportunity to
socialize with peers.
Fee: $ 75.00 Saturday s 10:00 to 11:00 GREEN and 11:15 to 12:15 BLUE
