Yale Child Study Center Announces:
Study of Speech Treatment for Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Who Do Not Talk Yet

What is the Purpose of this study?

  • To contrast two different treatment programs -
    • one that uses very structured discrete trial methods, and
    • one that is more naturalistic
  • to find the characteristics of individual children that show us which program will work better for each.
What will happen in the study?
  • We will assign children to treatments randomly. That means that you will not be able to choose which treatment your child gets, or to change the treatment group to which s/he is assigned.
  • Both treatments will be delivered individually for 12 weeks, with three 45 min. sessions per week by a specially trained speech-language pathologist.
  • No matter which treatment your child receives, we will ask all families to participate in parent training also. This training will help you carry over the treatment once the 12 weeks are over. You will be asked to attend 9 parent training sessions, outside of your child's treatment sessions.
  • We will also ask you to bring your child back six months after treatment ends so we can see whether the effects of the treatment have lasted over time.
Will my child like it?
  • Most children like both programs; each includes rewards and fun activities.
  • Some children become tired or upset in any intervention program; when this happens, your child can take a break.
  • We encourage families to "stick with it" even if the intervention is sometimes hard for the child; it is important for his/her development to learn these skills.
  • BUT-Parents will observe each session and are free to stop the intervention at any time.
Which children and families will qualify for the study?
  • Child has diagnosis of ASD
  • Child is between 2 and 6 years of age
  • Child uses fewer than 10 spontaneous words
  • Child needs to attend treatment sessions at Yale Child Study Center 3x/week for 12 weeks
  • A parent needs to participate in 9 parent training sessions, at times other than child treatment sessions take place

REQUEST FOR PARENT PARTICIPATION IN AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE SURVEY

My name is Stacy Jeleniewski and I am a graduate student at Connecticut College. For my thesis I have chosen to study parents' treatment decisions for their child's autism spectrum disorder as well as parent/provider communication about these treatment decisions. I am looking for parents to participate by filling out an anonymous online survey which asks questions about these topics. Raising awareness in both of these areas has the potential to improve parent/physician communication and thus benefit children with disorders on the autism spectrum. Your voice will help to shed light on this matter. If you would like participate, please click on the web address below. If you would like to read more about my project, please read this attached letter.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

My name is Stacy Jeleniewski and I am a graduate student at Connecticut College pursuing a Master's degree in psychology. For my thesis, I have chosen to study families' use of alternative and complementary therapies in treating the symptoms of their child's autism spectrum disorder. While there is much anecdotal evidence about the use of different therapies, few studies have examined this topic. Even less is known about the level of communication that families have with their primary care physicians about these therapies. It is my intent to find out more about what alternative and/or complementary therapies are most commonly being utilized by families. I am also interested in whether or not the use of such therapies is being shared with the child's primary care physician, and if so, how receptive the physician is to the use of these therapies.

I am currently collecting data for my thesis using an online survey. My hope is that parents/caregivers of children with disorders on the autism spectrum will take the time to visit the website and answer a questionnaire about their child related to the topics mentioned above. You may respond to the questionnaire by following the directions and website link at the bottom of this page.

Please be aware of the following important information:

  • The survey and its results are completely confidential in that the survey does not ask for any identifying information (i.e. name of your child, your address or telephone number).
  • Your decision to participate in this research project will, in no way, affect your relationship with the Autism Resource Center of Central Massachusetts or your ability to receive services provided by the center.
  • You are under no obligation to fill out this survey and may stop at any time if you no longer wish to participate. If you feel discomfort emotionally at any time during or after the survey completion and need further assistance, you may contact the agency/person from whom you received this survey (Autism Resource Center of Central Massachusetts), and/or the person(s) listed at the bottom of this letter.
In completing this questionnaire, you are helping me to gather more information about the coordination of care for children with disorders on the autism spectrum. The results from this study may help to educate the medical community about family use of alternative and complementary therapies and about the level of communication that exists between parents and physicians about these therapies. Raising awareness in both of these areas has the potential to improve parent/physician communication and thus benefit children with disorders on the autism spectrum. Your voice will help to shed light on this matter.

Thank you for your help, and I wish you and your family all the best.

Sincerely,
Stacy Jeleniewski

If you have any questions/concerns at any time regarding this study, please feel free to contact me at stacyjeleniewski@hotmail.com, my supervising professor, Dr. Audrey Zakriski at alzak@conncoll.edu, and/or Dr. Ann Devlin at 860-439-2333.

NOTICE: BIRTH TO THREE EVALUATION
The Office of the Child Advocate, in collaboration with CT Voices for Children, is conducting an evaluation of Connecticut's Birth to Three System. The purpose of the evaluation is to develop an understanding of the structure of and quality of services provided by the Birth to Three System, and to identify the strengths of the system as well as areas in need of improvement, and to make recommendations regarding any necessary improvements. The evaluation will occur in two phases.

The Office of the Child Advocate has obtained the services of Deborah List, Ph.D., M.P.H., a Child Health Policy Consultant, to assist with carrying out Phase One of the evaluation, which will include:

  • Examining the background and current status of the Birth to Three System in Connecticut;
  • Examining historical changes to and challenges in the program; and
  • Reviewing Birth to Three System data to understand its role in the larger system of care for children with special health care needs in Connecticut.
This phase of the evaluation will result in a short report that will highlight areas of concern and success, identify specific challenges to administering the Birth to Three System in Connecticut, and identify important questions for future research.

Phase Two of the evaluation will provide an in-depth look at areas identified in Phase One as requiring further investigation and the experiences of children and their families, as well as providers, and will result in a report outlining policy recommendations and a plan of action. During Phase Two of the evaluation, the Office of the Child Advocate will be interested in hearing from families who have applied for, worked with, and/or sought or received services from the Birth to Three System. In accordance with state law, any information provided to the Office of the Child Advocate will be held confidential.1

The Office of the Child Advocate is authorized by its governing statute to evaluate the provision of services to children by state-funded entities, including the Department of Developmental Services, without prior approval of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Please disregard any prior notices suggesting otherwise. In accordance with state law, any information provided to the Office of the Child Advocate is confidential.2 In addition, discrimination or retaliation against any employee who in good faith makes a complaint to the Child Advocate or cooperates with the Office of the Child Advocate in an investigation also is prohibited by law.3

Birth to Three System Adds Programs to Serve More Infants and Toddlers with Autism

Hartford- The Department of Developmental Services' (DDS) Birth to Three System recently announced new autism-specific early intervention programs. In response to heightened concern surrounding effective service provision for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the recent Academy of Pediatrics recommendation to screen all children at 18 and 24 months of age for ASD, Birth to Three has selected six agencies to operate the new programs. These agencies will complement the ongoing services provided by 38 agencies across the state serving children with a variety of developmental delays and their families.

Program selections were made by a team that included a parent, a State Department of Education representative, and others in collaboration with the Division of Autism Services of the DDS. These new programs are expected to cover 80% of the population under age three while other eligible children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder will continue to be well supported by current approved providers.

The autism-specific programs will begin to accept referrals on January 2, 2008. Additional information on all Birth to Three programs is available at www.birth23.org.

Optimal Outcome study: Deborah Fein, PhD, in the UConn Department of Psychology, is following a number of children who have lost their ASD diagnosis and have reached an excellent outcome. If you know of such a child, we would love to hear about him or her, and perhaps have them participate in our study. The children will be told that we are studying children who talked early vs. those who talked late, so they needn't hear any details of their own history that they don't know. We are also interested in testing high functioning children with autism in order study the differences between individuals who go on to lose their diagnoses and individuals who do not. Participation involves two sessions of neuropsychological testing, which can be done in your home, and an optional MRI. We are currently testing children between 8-15 years. Families will be compensated $200 for their time and will receive a report detailing the testing results from a licensed psychologist. For further information, please contact Molly Helt at molly.helt@uconn.edu or 860-456-2077.
